Yesterday was FAIRDAY for the 2009 Pride Festival and FC was there with our usual stall, but this year our stall featured an exhibition of FFF photos from the first 2 phases of the project AND the FFF3 PHOTO BOOTH which you will find at a number of Pride events in October!

Faces for Freedom is BACK!

That's right - phase two of Freedom Centre's Faces for Freedom project is underway. This time Faces for Freedom is supporting the National Day of Action (NDA) !! In fact we are collaborating with Gay And Lesbian Equality (GALE) and the WA Cross Campus Queer Network (CCQN) for their NDA event Families 4 Freedom!

This year, the National Day of Action is lobbying for relationship recognition regardless of gender so this round of Faces for Freedom submissions should show support for relationship recognition too! For more info on how to make a FFF submission click here

Families 4 Freedom is a community event on August 16th where the community are invited to come along and show their support and have a voice for relationship recognition regardless of gender. Freedom Centre will be at the event, taking FFF photos! For more info about the Families 4 Freedom event click here

Faces for Freedom 2 submissions that are made before July 31st will also be used to support and inform the Freedom Centre's submission to the Senate Inquiry into the Marriage Equality Amendment Bill 2009.

FC's National Human Rights Consultation Submission submitted!!

So the Freedom Centre's submission to the National Human Rights Consultation has just been submitted!!

We used your submissions to Faces for Freedom to inform and support our submission. CLICK HERE to read the full submission.

We summarized the main points of your FFF submissions with the following;
• Discrimination and marginalization in the form of heterosexism, homophobia, transphobia and biphobia are interpersonal violations of LGBTTIQ individuals’ (and their families’) human rights and freedom, and therefore impacts our lives in numerous ways.
• Everyone deserves the right to choose who they love and how they identify. Equality requires that LGBTTIQ people receive this right.
• An Australian Human Rights Act was identified as being required to protect the rights of LGBTTIQ people and all Australians equally.
• Diversity of sexuality and gender in Australia is seen as a positive thing that must be protected by a National Human Rights Act. Not having a Human Rights Act that protects the rights of people with diverse sexuality and gender would be a contradiction to the values of Australian culture of a ‘fair go’, freedom and equality.
• Legal recognition of gender and same sex marriage were two key issues that were raised as being rights that people with diverse sexuality and gender currently do not have upheld. We require an Australian Human Rights act to explicitly protect those rights.
• Transphobia was explicitly identified as restricting Transgender, Transsexual and Intersex people’s rights to equality, freedom of expression, dignity, health & well-being, accessibility, recognition before the law, freedom from discrimination and violence, and security of person.
• The UN Declaration of Human Rights was often used as a reference to model some ideals and basic human rights that should be included in an Australian Human Rights Act, however gaps were also highlighted in the UN Declaration. Faces for Freedom submissions expressed the need to explicitly state ‘sexual orientation’ and ‘gender identity’ in articles 2 & 16 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights in order to prevent discrimination and enable the right of all individuals to marry. This was expressed as also necessary in an Australian Human Rights Act.
Currently, Article 2 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights states that all people should be “entitled to the Rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status”. This was seen as inadequate without the explicit distinction of ‘sexual orientation’ and ‘gender identity’.
Article 16 of the UN declaration of Human Rights states; “Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. “ This too was expressed as inadequate without the additional distinction of ‘sexual orientation’ and ’gender identity’. There was a strong support from FFF submissions that these explicit distinctions should be made in an Australian Human Rights Act.

'Faces for Freedom' is a way of making a statement against homophobia, and for human rights in Australia!

What is the 'Faces Of Freedom' project?
A photography project by LGBTIQQ people and their supporters. It’s simply a series of photos of each of us holding a sign that makes a statement about anti-homophobia/transphobia/biphobia and our human rights.
Part of what we will use the project for is the current Human Rights Consultations being conducted by the Government and other human rights organizations, such as the Human Rights Commission. They are asking the Australian Public if we think we need a Human Rights Act, because currently WE DON’T HAVE ONE – despite 60% of Australians saying that they thought we DID!! Freedom Centre will submit the statements made in the photos as a formal submission in support of Australia having a Human Rights Act to protect the rights of LGBTIQQ people and all other Australians.

How can YOU contribute?
It’s easy;
1) Make a CLEAR and VISIBLE sign that says a short statement about why you think we need a Human Rights Act or why we need to take action against homophobia, heterosexism, transphobia & biphobia!!
So when you’re thinking of your statement for your photo, please think about including;
-HOW homophobia goes against our human rights
-WHY we need a Human Rights Act in Australia
-WHAT a Human Rights Act would need to include to protect the human rights of people in the LGBTIQQ community

2) Take a photo of yourself holding your sign (your face doesn't have to be visible if you wish to remain anonymous).

3) Email a jpeg photo of yourself holding YOUR statement against homophobia and for Human Rights in Australia to info@freedom.org.au. Include your postcode (won't be posted online) and any titles, names, statements or blurbs that go with your photo.

Requirements for you photos to be posted on the Faces for Freedom blogspot;
- we must be able to read your sign
- keep your language respectful
- no drugs, alcohol or nudity!
- get your submission in by Saturday 16th of May
- it should preferrably be a jpeg
- you CAN submit more than once!! :)

AND don't forget to be as creative as you like with your signs, statements, and backgrounds in the photos!!

Faces for Freedom is a project of the Freedom Centre in support of IDAHo (International Day Against Homophobia, May 17). The project is based on the US project called Faces of Us.
